ABSTRACT

Creating the Learning Environment Basic objectives are organized in three general areas: patient-centered, officecentered, and physician-centered. A learning environment is created for all three areas. Students (this includes residents) must be motivated to learn, must be open-minded about the possibility that they can learn something new, and must possess some level of self-directed learning skill. By virtue of the fact that a preceptor is a self-directed, continuous learner, there is modeling of all of these behaviors for the resident. The learning process is facilitated by paying attention to the items discussed below.
