ABSTRACT

Epidemiology • The incidence ranges from 0.4 per 100 000 per year (in Nigeria)

to 32.3 per 100 000 per year (in the USA).

Aetiology • Risk factors include:

- familial polyposis coli (FPC) - Lynch syndrome I and II - high intake of dietary fat - low intake of dietary fibre - obesity - high alcohol intake - bile acids - tobacco smoking - asbestos - ulcerative colitis - Crohn’s disease - family history of colorectal cancer - previous history of colorectal polyps or cancer - ureterosigmoidostomy.
