ABSTRACT

Emergency physicians evaluate and treat myriad patients from all aspects of life. We treat all patients regardless of situation or income. This includes criminals, sexual assault victims, crime victims, children of abuse, etc. When we treat these types of patient, we become involved with their subsequent legal issues. It would be hard to find an emergency physician who has practiced for any significant amount of time and has not been given a subpoena or has not appeared in court. However, we do not receive much education concerning these legal issues in our training. Therefore, this chapter is composed from a combination of our clinical experiences and our readings.
