ABSTRACT

Any police officer or police staff member or social services staff member can receive an initial disclosure. Police forces across the country utilise various terms or acronyms for their child protection units. The nature of interview conducted by police will depend upon the type of abuse alleged and the current age of the victim. Most police forces have developed and maintain victim interview rooms that are located some distance from police stations. The criminal investigation commences the moment a referral or an allegation is made to the police. The police and staff of the Crown Prosecution Services (CPS) will then assess the evidence and a decision will be made by the CPS as to whether sufficient evidence exists to go ahead with criminal proceedings. Police investigators and social service workers are familiar with Victim Support and other organisations and individuals who offer counselling and support to both the victim and the victim’s family members.
