ABSTRACT

Getting people to turn their back on these reasons and objections is bound to be difficult. This is a delicate area, our language use being, in many ways, an extension of our personality, background and experiences. The way we use language at work is also affected by the culture of the NHS as a whole, and of the individual organisation. Although there can be no easy answers, this chapter looks at some common barriers to plain language, and suggests various ways of overcoming them.
