ABSTRACT

So you have convinced enough of the right people that communicating in plain language is both acceptable and beneficial. How do you now go about implementing plain language use?

Wye and McClenahan1 found that the project teams they studied often organised large workshops or presentations and issued clinical guidelines. These approaches were successful in raising awareness of the project and of the relevant research evidence, but did not in themselves usually change behaviour. They found that putting research evidence into practice was most effective; their approach is summarised in Box 5.1.
