ABSTRACT

Many people who have disabilities are discriminated against or feel discriminated against in most areas of their lives, not least concerning their sexuality. Disabled people and their partners are also part of society and not separate beings. This chapter presents a case study of Anne, a young woman who had been blind since she was 3 years old, expressed great relief that she had a home visit from the family planning doctor. Many professionals working with people with disabilities, example-occupational therapists and physiotherapists are uncertain how or when to broach the subject of sexuality. One way to deal with this is to build sensitive questions about sexual relationships into any assessment. Enquiry is often made concerning bowel or bladder function, or mobility. They are able to observe progress made as a result of counseling input. Unfortunately, in our society sexual abuse exists and affects people of both sexes, of all ages, and the disabled and nondisabled.
