ABSTRACT

Nurses frequently take a lead role in the management of chronic diseases. Please reread the introduction to Chapter 4 about your need to be qualified for a specialist role.

Case study 10.1 The nurse you are supervising brings some difficult cases to a clinical super vision session with you. The common theme for all three is that the patient is suffering from chronic pain, which is proving difficult to control over time. The three cases are a 70-year-old man with trigeminal neuralgia, a 75-year-old woman complaining of painful cramps and restless legs at night and a 60-yearold woman whose post-herpetic neuralgia is poorly controlled.
