ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the way in which people become the narratives that they tell. It draws together the threads of resilience in the six narratives told by these men and women. The chapter identifies the complexities in six narratives: narrative of normal sexual development, narrative of a silence recently broken, narrative of the need to remember and the need to forget, narrative of protecting and helping others, narrative of justice at any cost, and narrative of remaining defiant. It draws together the interwoven threads of the various narratives told and examines the overall pattern, texture and colour of the tapestry created by the men and women interviewed. The chapter reconstructs the differing ways in which people have developed resilient narratives. It discusses gender differences in relation to the development of narratives of resilience and the impact of the wider system on this process.
