ABSTRACT

People's struggles to identify their spiritual domain arise for a number of reasons. First there is a failure to understand the nature of spirituality and the way in which the spiritual aspect of our personhood is integrally connected with the totality of the self. Second, there is the ongoing confusion between spirituality and religion. A third key issue is the complexity of spirituality. There have been many attempts to capture the complexity of spirituality by defining its various dimensions. The taxonomy of dimensions vary, with some including aspects that are primarily religious, some focusing on elements not connected to the religious context, and others including a mix of dimensions, both religious and general. The concept of quest or journey is found extensively throughout spiritual literature and involves a search for the sacred or the divine, or a search for meaning, understanding, or wholeness.
