ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with the assertion that communication is a basic life skill. Communication is not only a basic life skill, but it is the basic tool for the integration of spirituality and healthcare. The art of communication is a key component to the practice of medicine in general and the integration of spirituality and healthcare in particular. First, these skills will enable us to help people say what they mean, even when talking about powerful and sometimes painful issues. Second, communication skills will help us draw forth, often from the depths of the person, thoughts, feelings, and perceptions that may be hindering the process of healing. What is critical is that interactions with others around spirituality and health truly be an exploration of the individual's personal culture. Mental health experts may have the opportunity to explore the culture of their patients carefully. Primary care providers rarely have this luxury.
