ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the multifaceted nature of personhood, explores the complexity of the individual who seeks healing, and illustrates the importance of a multifaceted approach. Movement into the realm of the spiritual can take place at several logical moments in the healing process. It can happen when the patient and physician begin the process of gathering and sharing information. The movement is primarily a matter of gathering information, just as information is gathered about a physical issue. Whole persons do not bring physical bodies and physical issues alone, they also bring the other aspects of the self. All of these aspects are intrinsically related to one another, and whatever happens in one realm is likely to have an impact in the other realms. Perhaps the most destructive form of indirect communication involves a person transferring their feeling to the other in an aggressive and generally harmful way through the use of sarcasm, name calling, inference, and accusation.
