All C atoms in C(s) have equal electron shares in covalent bonding. Each O atom in O2 has an equal electron share in the covalent bond.
C O each oxygen gains a share of covalently bonded electrons to carbon; the carbon loses shares of electrons covalently bonded to oxygen.
