ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a case of a 75-year-old man who presents worried that he has recently developed quite a marked tremor and nothing he can do helps control it. The tremor is not rhythmic and is present at rest and when he attempts a task. The man looks well and there is nothing of note except a marked coarse tremor. The tremor is not rhythmic and is present at rest and when he attempts a task. There is no indication of any cogwheel rigidity or lack of facial expressions. The treatment for lithium toxicity depends on the level of lithium in the blood. If the level in the blood is very high, dialysis can be helpful. Stopping lithium for a while may be necessary, although a dose reduction may be adequate in mild cases. Patients need to be properly educated on the symptoms of toxicity so they can identify them early and be aware of the need for close monitoring.
