ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case of the mother of a 19-year-old man who comes to general practitioner (GP) in general practice hoping to understand her son's behaviour. She discusses her son's overactivity and behaviour problems. When her son was at school these problems were often discussed at parent evenings. She says that other children avoided him perhaps because he had some unusual behaviours. These included laughing out loud, repeating phrases and some repetitive behavior. He has poor eye contact but will look at you and readily smiles at you. There is no evidence of any psychotic phenomena, anxiety or depression. On observation, the GP noticed the 19-year-old's high forehead, large head and long face. This man clearly has learning difficulties. Given that this man is happy living with his family, raising anxieties about diagnosis at this juncture may not be that helpful, and your priority given his mother's concerns would be around ensuring a healthy and happy future for him.
