ABSTRACT

The aim of the airflow system is to prevent airborne microorganisms entering the surgical wound. Surgical procedures that create stomas begin with a prefix denoting the organ, or area, being operated on and end with the suffix '-ostomy'. In medicine, a stoma is an opening, either natural or surgically created, which connects a portion of a cavity to another area. Most are due to careless positioning of the patient and inadequate padding resulting in direct compression. They can also result from direct surgical injury, compression by tourniquets, traction and ischaemia secondary to hypotension. They are most likely to occur in extreme positions and prolonged surgery. Screening, in medicine, is a strategy used in a population to detect a disease in individuals without signs or symptoms of that disease. Unlike the rest of medicine, in screening, tests are performed on those patients without any clinical indication of disease.
