The term acute coronary syndrome (ACS) encompasses the spectrum of patients presenting with chest pain or other symptoms due to myocardial ischaemia that ranges from ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) to unstable angina pectoris (UA), with the latter two often referred to as NSTEAC (non-ST elevation acute coronary syndrome). The common pathophysiology of ACS is rupture or erosion of an atherosclerotic plaque.
