ABSTRACT

Rachel Armstrong is from Pittsburgh. Her Dad had been an hourly worker at the famous Homestead Works, U.S. Steel’s flagship plant. She was the only one of four children to go to college. It was a fluke, Rachel said. Her parents couldn’t afford tuition fees. But one day Rachel read an ad in the paper. Carnegie Mellon University was offering free scholarships to qualified students who could write an essay explaining why they wanted to go to college. Rachel won the scholarship and was on her way.
