ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Having considered the basic aspects of study design and the application of statistics to observations collected in a dental setting, we now consider an issue that is at the heart of the practice of dentistry. How can the dentist most effectively address the needs and expectations of patients within the constraints of staff availability and in a way that is fi nancially realistic? The application of evidence-based dentistry (EBD) may assist in resolving some of these issues.
