ABSTRACT

When it comes to domestic violence, everybody is a potential first responder. Unfortunately, most of us are woefully unprepared for that important role. The initial responses to a woman breaking her silence about domestic violence are terribly important in securing her safety. After reading this chapter you will be in a position to represent a positive influence in her move from victim to survivor. Even when women are not ready to share about their victimization, you can have a positive impact on their sense of self that may come to fruition down the road. One of the most important things we have to do as individuals, and as a society, is recognize and acknowledge intimate partner victimization, no matter how uncomfortable it might make us. In addition to suggestions for individuals responding to domestic violence, this section presents responses for policy makers, and those in a position to influence policy.
