ABSTRACT

Cancer is one of the major non-communicable diseases, with a worldwide incidence of approximately 14 million new cases and 8 million cancer-related deaths in 2012. The incidence is expected to rise to nearly 25 million over the next 10-20 years. The increasing incidence, together with increasing age of the population, technologically driven imaging and expensive therapies, puts a significant burden on the health-care system. Not surprisingly, therefore, there is a move to improve preventive strategies in dealing with the cancer burden in our communities.
