The upper respiratory tract comprises the nose, nasal cavity, sinuses, mouth, pharynx and larynx, and provides vital functions of air conditioning, phonation and sensation (taste, smell and irritation). The upper respiratory tract protects the lower respiratory tract through mechanisms including:
• Nasal hairs, which capture large dust particles as they enter the respiratory tract.
