This chapter discusses all the questions that need to be resolved in order to create effective kanban signals for dependent-demand (the fabricated "children" of the parent part number bill of material) manufactured parts. The discussion revolves around answers to questions involving stocking level for the parent part number; actual net production time available at the feeder machine; setup and changeover times per part number; and run time on calculated kanban quantity for dependent component. It also resolves actual net time available for setup and changeover; modifiers such as manufacturing "multiples," "minimums," or ABC classifications; and actual testing and tweaking of data to ensure the applied math works and passes a "reasonableness" test. When managers do share a machining center with both kanban and nonkanban part numbers, there will probably be a need for scheduling rules to ensure the kanban-controlled part numbers flow as needed to the production cell.
