A cam is a mechanical device having a profile or groove machined on it, which gives an irregular or special motion to a follower. The type of follower and its motion depend on the shape of the profile or groove. Cams fall into two main classes: radial cams and cylindrical cams. The follower of a radial cam reciprocates or oscillates in a plane perpendicular to the cam axis, whereas with a cylindrical cam, the follower moves parallel to the cam axis. SolidWorks creates cams by utilizing existing cam templates. There are templates for circular and linear cams and internal and external cams. The templates allow the designer to work directly on the cam profile and eliminate the need for a displacement diagram. The cam model fails to mate with the cam follower because of the discontinuities of the face. This is what SolidWorks generates. Therefore, some modifications have been made to make the assembly of the parts feasible.
