ABSTRACT

Die design is extremely useful in manufacturing engineering applications. This chapter shows how the design of the different components of a die set can be achieved using SolidWorks. Die design in a general sense either involves designing an entire press tool with all components taken together or, in a limited way, involves designing that particular component which is machined to receive the blank. Die sets are made by several manufacturers, and they may be purchased in a great variety of shapes and sizes. The major components of a die set are the die holder and the punch holder. The other components of a die set include die block, blanking punch, punch plate, pilot, stripper, back gauge, front spacer, and automatic stop. Each of these has to be designed, and all components have to be assembled to cut a particular scrap strip.
