ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the guidelines for designing for functionality and the tool path for a 19-mm female Quick-Release Buckle. Build orientation has the biggest impact on part functionality and feature strength. However, a thinner layer height can improve strength to certain features and geometries. Comparing building the part in horizontal and vertical orientations in terms of estimated build time and material usage, it is found that building the part horizontally is more cost-effective. Comparing building the part in horizontal and vertical orientations in terms of strength, it is found that horizontal orientation strengthens the features along layer lines, whereas vertical orientation weakens the features layer to layer.
