ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the importance of being able to prove competence in practice, and what is expected within various roles in general practice nursing. Levels of competence are linked to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework and the Quality and Outcomes Framework. Competence is the demonstrable ability and skills required to undertake a particular role or set of activities. P. Benner's 'novice to expert' model is used within nursing to define five levels of practice, ranging from novice to expert. Good practice would be to check these against the national competences to ensure that they align with them. Assessment of competence should be completed with a senior supervisor or mentor as part of ongoing employment and career development for practice nurses and health care assistants (HCAs). There are a number of ways in which performance can be assessed. These include: self-assessment, direct observation, question-and-answer sessions, reflective discussions, peer review, learning log evidence.
