ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the importance of education and training and advises on appropriate approaches to learning, with specific advice for both nurses and health care assistants (HCAs). Many nurses and HCAs may feel anxious at the prospect of undertaking courses or attending study days. Learning occurs in both formal and informal ways. Most learning probably occurs in informal situations, through observing others, talking to others, practising activities, trial and error, or simply working with people 'in the know.' Learning through reflective practice is about learning from experience. It is viewed as an important strategy for health care professionals and a component of lifelong learning. A learning and development plan will help both staff and employer to plan what education or training is needed for the role both now and in the future. A learning needs assessment will help to focus on what is needed for an individual to be more effective in a particular role.
