Design and layout Spend time in bookshops watching people inspecting non-fiction books. They pick them up, often because of the cover, but may be seen searching for titles on a subject they need. They usually flick through the book, looking at the general shape and layout, before looking at the contents list or reading some of the content. Dense text w ithout anything to break it up looks boring and hard work to a reader. Too m uch white space in a workbook may m ake them decide that they can supply their ow n paper for writing at less cost. Time spent on the appearance of a book is not wasted. As an author, you do have a m ajor influence on the way that the publisher designs the final im print of the book, building on your preferred format. However, your suggested design m ust fit w ith the publisher's usual in-house layout.
