ABSTRACT

When Nicola arrived on the following Monday there was a message for her. Barbara had phoned to cancel the session, but had asked if she could call her at the time when she would have seen her. Nicola had two other clients to see first that morning, and she was aware that Barbara was not too far from her thoughts at times, but she felt she managed to keep her focus. After the second session Nicola wrote up her notes and then sat down to contemplate her call to Barbara. Barbara went silent. Nicola stayed with the silence, aware that her own thinking was along the lines of how flexible the surgery was and that she could go and see clients elsewhere. She had undertaken home visits for counselling sessions. Barbara hoped that she would improve, but she knew she did need treatment; it was that fear of going into hospital. She knew things were not good.
