ABSTRACT

This chapter describes about a counselling session provided by Chris to Billy. Chris sat in the counselling room waiting for Billy to arrive. A few more minutes to go, and it gave him time to reflect. He liked to spend a couple of minutes silently preparing himself with his eyes closed, to really let go of any of the thoughts that were in his mind and might distract him from his therapeutic work. Time to affirm to himself his intention to be sensitive and open for the next hour, putting his own cares and concerns aside to be fully present for his client. Chris was aware that people could drink to relax and sleep, but actually it was more alcohol-induced than a natural physiological switching off. That people who used alcohol could, when they tried to cut back, find themselves unable to 'switch off' naturally.
