ABSTRACT

Obesity has significant implications for individuals, their work and their working environment. The ergonomics of obesity can be described in terms of: the use of routine workplace equipment; the use of personal protective equipment; and uniforms. Studies have reported that obesity is one of the many factors which influences sickness absence. A small number of jobs have specific fitness requirements and a standard of aerobic fitness is needed both at pre-employment and during the course of the job. The reduction in aerobic and cardiovascular fitness that accompanies excessive weight gain is due to a combination of factors. The presence of back pain, knee and hip osteoarthritis can affect overall mobility both in response to emergency situations or routine tasks. The chapter outlines three examples of the potential difficulties faced by users of stab vests, plastic aprons and respiratory masks and equipment.
