ABSTRACT

Every one of us, particularly during our formative years, has been strongly influenced by factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, family, socio-economic status, and education. These factors ultimately influenced the blueprint by which we approach life. Emphasizing cultural similarities rather than differences builds bridges toward understanding human beings as persons. The wisdom gained by knowing these similarities and differences honors and affirms the value of these persons as human beings. Generalizations and cultural stereotyping must also be avoided. Although caregivers possess some knowledge about an individual's influential background, they must remember that not every individual in a population embraces all aspects of the belief system represented in the broader group. The chapter provide us the opportunity to share and discuss our own ethnic and cultural background and our ideas about dying and death.
