ABSTRACT

Viral hepatitis is inflammation of the liver caused by one of several strains of the hepatitis virus, which include A, B, C, D, E and G. Sexual contact is a major route of transmission, in both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. Hepatitis C is widespread and highly prevalent with up to 5% of the population in developing countries carrying the disease. As with hepatitis B, hepatitis C is transmitted via blood and bodily fluids so can be transmitted during sexual contact. Hepatitis B is one of the most frequent and widespread contagious diseases in the world, with prevalence being highest in African, Asian and South American countries. Acute hepatitis B usually resolves spontaneously, so no treatment is required. Treatments for hepatitis B should be continued long term. Treatment for hepatitis C should be continued for 6 to 12 months. Patients should be regularly monitored during and after treatment and retreatment may be necessary.
