ABSTRACT

The election of the Treasurer of the Association is by members of the RB and takes place almost at the start of the meeting. Tony Keable-Elliott, Treasurer of the British Medical Association (BMA) and a director of BMA Services, upset the representatives by urging them to vote against the motion, which he said was based on 'fundamental misconceptions'. At the end of the Annual Representative Meeting the Council met under the chairmanship of the President. The duties of the Chairman of Council extend far beyond the formal business of chairing the Council and other recognised medico-political activities. As was the custom the BMA decided to hold a memorial service for Solly, who was a member of an Orthodox Jewish community in Birmingham. In spite of political differences there were always attempts to maintain reasonable personal and social relationships and on 16 May the Chairman of the Council gave a dinner at BMA House at which Kenneth Clarke was a guest.
