ABSTRACT

The University Air Squadron and its Naval equivalent were restricted to people who were working for commissions in those services and so most medical students were drafted into the Senior Training Corps (STC), which was incorporated into the Home Guard. The British Army commissioned qualified doctors as full lieutenants with two pips. It was necessary to convert educated, unenthusiastic 23-year-olds into officers within six weeks and so the course was intensive. Dr. Beevers could do nothing but set a separate examination later for the STC members. Ray Gilchrist's ward was the centre for an experiment with the new wonder drug called penicillin. A new drug called streptomycin was being used experimentally to treat it and when authors had a case admitted it was included in the trial. The thieving of medical stores in Egypt was a highly developed and sophisticated skill.
