ABSTRACT
Respiratory disease is the single commonest cause of admission to medical paediatric beds in industrialised countries and, alongside acute gastroenteritis (World Health Organization estimates), the commonest cause of death in the poorer countries of the world. In the under-5-year-old age group alone it has been estimated that more than 700 children die each day from acute respiratory infections (ARI) (see Figure 5.1).
