ABSTRACT

Orthopaedic disorders represent 10-15% of children’s health problems. Eliciting an accurate history may be difficult; examining a screaming child is impossible. The approach must always be slow and gentle. Use of the unaffected limb for comparison of movement is useful – joint movement varies with the age of the child. In this chapter some of the common problems will be discussed, together with their presentation and treatment. With many conditions early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent permanent bone damage leading to long-term disability.
