ABSTRACT
Throughout human history infectious diseases have been responsible for more death and morbidity in childhood than any other single cause. Pathogens interact with deprivation, malnutrition, overcrowding and poor sanitation to give rise to human disease. Consequently, economic improvement, planned housing, clean water and sewage disposal are as critical to controlling these diseases as immunisation and antibiotics.
