ABSTRACT
A quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) is a measure of health outcome, a combination of the change in quality of life and the change in life expectancy caused by some healthcare intervention. Suppose a new medicine allows a patient to live five more years but only in a state of health that is considered half as good as perfect health. Then the QALY is 2.5 (5 × 0.5).
