ABSTRACT

A world of life and motion Almost three decades ago an ingenious team of traffic experts in Bordeaux pioneered a road traffic m anagem ent system called 'G ertrude'. The team seemed to have something like the following underlying philosophy - 'life is movem ent; m ovem ent is life'. Their m ain professional obsession was w ith traffic bottlenecks. These slow down and in terrupt circulation in city arteries, increase tension and impatience, decrease air quality, reduce working and leisure hours, and tu rn everyone's time schedule into a futile exercise.
