ABSTRACT

If the research program is evaluated at regular intervals, then progress in different areas can be monitored, demonstrating which areas are progressing and which may need added attention. The picture of evaluation focuses upon how the research director can evaluate success in terms of research development within the department. One measure of quality would be the speed with which it is accepted for publication. This chapter emphasizes the long-term development of departmental scholarship. A rating of journals could also be based on their impact and/or immediacy factors. If the department has established particular research-related expectations or an agenda, it is important to keep statistics relevant to the criteria. Individual measures of productivity are then placed under the goals so that progress towards that goal can be assessed. Regular evaluation provides data that can be very useful as justification for training or development grants.
