ABSTRACT

Case 7.1: Kapfunde versus Abbey National Mrs Kapfunde was employed as a clerical worker on a temporary basis by the Abbey National building society in the UK. She applied for a permanent post as a cashier at the branch where she was working. As part of the standard recruitment procedure Mrs Kapfunde was required to complete a medical questionnaire, which asked her, among other things, to give details of any absences from work for health reasons. Mrs Kapfunde completed the medical questionnaire and declared a five-week absence from work due to sickle cell anaemia.
