ABSTRACT

Introduction A railway company in a large city in the north of England requires all people who undertake tasks defined as 'safety critical' to be subject to its drug and alcohol policy. This includes the requirement for unannounced (so-called 'random') drug and alcohol testing. The external regulator of the industry is aware of requirements and managerial issues that allow the testing regime to form part of the health and safety arrangements of the company.
