ABSTRACT

Background Alcohol consumption and alcohol-related health problems have increased in most European countries over the last decades. Problems of heavy drinking are generally regarded as the cause of a number of severe health difficulties. In the International Labour Organisation (ILO) programme for the management of alcohol-and drug-related issues in the workplace it is stated:

Alcohol consumption among women has increased during the last decades, and the prevalence of severe alcohol dependence in women has been

reported to be around 2%, compared with men at around 6%.2^ Therefore, in most workplaces there will be some cases of alcohol abuse among employees.
