ABSTRACT

Tutoring occurs on a one-to-one basis or in very small groups as a way of giving feedback and encouraging reflective practice. Tutoring can be part of an ongoing educational programme or requested as a one off event. Clinical bedside teaching is extremely valuable and best done on a 3ne-to-one basis in palliative care. The teaching may take a variety of forms, either role modelling, where the learner watches the experienced practitioner, or the learner undertaking a practical procedure under the supervision and watchful eye of the experienced teacher. Facilitation skills also enable each participant to contribute to the teaching session. Small group work is particularly useful for teaching skills, reflecting on our attitudes and sharing our experiences. It can also be used for teaching factual information but is well suited for less fact-based topics such as communication skills, spirituality and body image.
