ABSTRACT

This chapter considers several teaching strategies with tips for making the best use of them. Much healthcare teaching is done in the clinic or by the bedside with little time to prepare. The three basic elements of a practical teaching session are: preparation (set), procedure (dialogue), and summary (closure). Ensure that the learner is familiar with the arrangements and knows what you are going to do before the teaching session begins. The teacher performs the procedure without commentary, at normal speed. Problem-based learning reverses the traditional approach to teaching and learning. It starts with individual examples or problems; by considering these learners develop general principles and concepts that they can generalise to other situations. The role of the inspirational teacher as role model and motivator might be lost in fully web-based courses.
