ABSTRACT
Background By far the majority of practices in the UK are privately owned small businesses. Most are well established and have been seeing patients in much the same way for many years. A few governmental pressures have altered the emphasis on healthcare delivery; payment and incentive schemes have altered priorities. Fundamentally, however, the system of seeing patients on request, two surgeries per day with or without an appointment is the same as it has been for many years.
