ABSTRACT

In 1962, Carlos Beyer, John Tindal, and Charles Sawyer published the study “Electrophysiological study of projections from mesencephalic central gray matter to forebrain in the rabbit” in the journal Experimental Neurology. For Carlos, it would be the rst of many (nearly 50) published studies involving the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) as a model animal. Carlos and Charles Sawyer collaborated in three more electrophysiological studies in the rabbit: on the milk ejection reex and maintenance of lactation, on factors that modulate responsiveness to acoustic stimuli, and on the effects of hormones on the electrical activity of the brain, both in the rat and in the rabbit (Tindal et al. 1963; Beyer and Sawyer 1964; Beyer et al. 1967). For Carlos, this latter paper was one of his rst addressing the effects of gonadal hormones on brain activity, a eld to which he would continue making important contributions throughout his career.
