However, reduction in the fracture spacing is expensive, and may even cause interference and subsequent reduction in the hydrocarbon production (Jaeger et al. 2009, Brudy & Zoback 1999, Nelson et al. 2005), which could be a cause of near-wellbore tortuosity or even pinching, a factor that usually determines the success or failure of the HF treatments (Zhou et al. 2008, Cherny et al. 2009, Linkov 2012).
